Synopsis

Naar de Overkant is een roadmovie op de Afsluitdijk. Terwijl de filmmaakster bij verschillende automobilisten instapt met de vragen: ‘waar kom je vandaan’ en ‘waar ga je heen?’ ontstaan er gesprekken over de dromen en verlangens van mensen onderweg. De oer-Hollandse Afsluitdijk wordt een magische plek, zonder begin en zonder einde. Is onze bestemming wel zo rechtlijnig als de Afsluitdijk zelf?

To the other side is a roadmovie that takes place on the Afsluitdijk (The Closure Dike, a 32km long causeway damming off the fresh water of the IJsselmeer from the salt water of the North Sea). As the filmmaker hitches rides with travellers along the causeway, she asks the questions ‘where do you come from?’ and ‘where are you going?’. Their answers lead to conversations about the dreams and longings of the people on the road. The Dutch Closure Dike becomes a magical place, without beginning or end. Is our path ever as straight as the road itself?
